The ultimate Donatelli brothers story

Sports reporting, Wiffle Ball, umpiring — this story has everything, as my brother Dan pointed out, that a Donatelli brother could want. These guys in Michigan, who play in a very competitive Wiffle League, solved what could have been a massive Wiffle controversy by placing a phone call to a Major League umpire in order to get a ruling.

I love this breathless lead from Ryan Winfield of the Kalamazoo Wiffle League:

It was an historic night at Township Park on Monday, where crowds witnessed an intense series between the defending champion Friars and their rivals, the Industrials. In a game where so many of the league’s high-caliber stars were on display,  arguably the most exciting play in league history was decided by a man over 2,200 miles away in San Diego, California.

This is “The Play.”

The outfielder caught the ball in fair territory, but his momentum carried him over the fence. Is it an out? Or a home run?

How did Major League umpire Bill Welke rule? Find out here.

  • Oh my God. How have we never talked about Wiffleball?

  • Joe Donatelli

    Let’s talk. Hell, let’s play.
