Here are the links to the stories mentioned on the podcast:
I was going to provide a link to the prison-hotel letter, but it’s so good I will paste the whole thing here:
Prison could be tourist attraction
Letter to the Editor – Apr. 4th, 2008
RICHARD COMMONS, Lima
Once again, Lima and Allen County are about to lose a chance to enhance our community as a tourist attraction.
Instead of considering destroying the old Lima State Hospital/Lima Correctional Institute, we could change it into a tourist attraction and museum/hotel — just the way it is. Give tours, serve food in the old cafeteria. Use the inside recreation yard as a picnic area. What a place to use as crime deterrent programs as you could allow people to stay for a day or weekend. Take the ASTOP program out of the hotels and place it in a real jail environment.
How can we stand by and allow one of our last great landmarks to be destroyed? Ask the state to turn it over to the Parks Department and/or county museum and rent out some of the space there.
Let’s use the place for good.
What about an addition to the Allen County Jail? There are a lot of things to consider before we destroy it.
