An album I don’t love or hate: Watch the Throne

I want to love the new Jay-Z/Kanye album, because I think both of their previous albums were brilliant. But Watch the Throne is just not doing it for me. There are three really good songs (“Made in America” is the best track on the album), a bunch of OK ones and a few clunkers. I would love to hear an album these two work on in which they nail it, because I think it would be amazing. One of my favorite parts of the album is when Kanye points out that South Park (hilariously, in my opinion) made fun of him, and in the next line says he ignores his critics, thus proving Trey Parker and Matt Stone correct. West is inexplicably un-self-aware. And as a Cleveland guy I had to groan when they forced a name-check of LeBron and D-Wade. Although maybe it was appropriate. The album felt like the Heat’s season. Close, and potentially special, but ultimately unsatisfying.
